Presence, position, and distance within the pictorial territory

About this series

SITUS is a series of contemporary abstract paintings exploring the position, boundaries, and distance between elemental forms. With an approach where negative space is as active as matter, each work functions as a minimalist abstract artwork structured around lines and territorial shifts.

In this series, Maurizio Valch presents a visual space where the territory operates not merely as a background, but as an active arena of coexistence. The artist builds these surfaces using a meticulous process of layering, glazes, and incisions, creating an original acrylic and oil painting on canvas series with a pronounced physical depth. Simple geometric shapes, either outlined or solid, are positioned within a field of relationships marked by the tension between proximity and isolation.

Each work's structure emerges through textured geometric abstract painting, where lines function as crossings or spatial divisions without enforcing a single direction. By avoiding closed narrative interpretations, both color and negative space act as organizing forces. SITUS thus becomes an exploration of permanence, margins, and the coexistence of elements that find their definition in the very distance that separates them.
