QUIES — Maurizio Valch | STRATA Abstract Painting
The emotion of QUIES is not told: it remains distributed. It gathers in a dark band that weighs upon the others, filters through the barely visible reds of the upper area, and is interrupted by pale lines that run across the canvas without managing to impose a stable boundary. Nothing compels one to imagine a preceding event or an outcome. Yet the painting sustains a recognisable state: that of a calm that has not entirely erased disturbance. The strata do not arrange themselves like a landscape; they remain together under silent pressure, as if each band had to negotiate its place with the next.
I did not need to narrate a wound in order to let the surface retain something of its experience. What matters more to me is that a line trembles between two materials than turning it into the sign of a precise story. When an edge is too clean, it ceases to contain life: it has already decided too much. That is why the divisions curve, break off and reappear with a different thickness. They may resemble seams, but a seam does not guarantee that what it joins has ceased to be separate. At times, it merely makes the fragility of the joining visible.
The presence of a viewer before the vertical format changes the reading of that fragility. The painting does not present itself as a distant window, but as a narrow, tall body that maintains a certain distance, also vulnerable to the sideward gaze that reveals its thickness. Against the bare wall, the two small blocks—the white one suspended above, the green one contained much lower down—acquire a disproportionate intensity. They do not dominate the composition; they punctuate it. Between them, the brown, grey and greenish layers do not construct a route, but a duration. Emotion becomes spatial: an isolated light may persist without promising salvation; a support may exist without becoming a refuge.
I wonder whether stillness can exist without safety. The title names a rest, but not an immobile surface or an attained reconciliation. There are days when the mind wants to resolve everything: to decide what protects, what threatens, what must remain, what is best abandoned. Painting allows me not to obey that haste. I let a dark area be dark, a white rectangle not explain its appearance, a line retain at once the aspect of a scar and of contact. Perhaps trust does not consist in making every boundary firm, but in refusing to turn uncertainty into an enemy.
This reserve distinguishes QUIES from a psychological painting understood as the illustration of an inner state. The work does not translate an emotion into recognisable symbols: it makes it act through the irregular rhythm of the material, the distance between the two geometric accents, and the never fully resolved balance of its bands. The upper darkness does not overcome the lighter areas, but neither does it dissipate; the green is not protected by the pale band surrounding it, though it finds there a minimal suspension. Before the canvas, the viewer is not given a story to decipher. They are given a relation: that of what remains close without merging, what holds precisely because it cannot be fully secured.
