Context study / QUINQUE
Contemporary Art Exhibition featuring the Artwork QUINQUE by Maurizio Valch
"QUINQUE" unfolds before the gaze as a topography of rigorously balanced chromatic and tectonic tensions. In the upper band, a dense and saturated plane of burnt sienna and ochre dominates the composition, exerting a silent gravity over the exhibition space. Below this dark mass, a stratum of vibrant mustard yellow offers itself not as a mere chromatic background or decorative resource, but as a material embodiment of generosidad (generosity). This lower plane acts as a fertile foundation, a physical ground that unconditionally supports the visual and conceptual weight of the painting. The pictorial matter here behaves as a nourishing support: the yellow dilates and stratifies to receive the pressures of the ochre, turning the act of painting into an offering where the base physically offers itself so that the rest of the structure acquires its true gravity and presence.
When facing the upper ochre plane of the canvas, I felt an urgent need to wound the matter to find its most intimate truth. I did not paint the three thin horizontal lines on the surface; I carved them, excavated them directly into the fresh oil and acrylic with the firmness of scraping. With this gesture of subtraction, where I extract paint to hang three small niches of light from it, I seek a profundidad (depth) that is not illusory or perspectivist, but purely somatic and mental. For me, descending to the depths of the canvas involves relinquishing control, stripping the matter of its opacity to let the mystery of rustic light interact with the relief. These incisions are not aggressions against the support, but necessary openings that demonstrate that true consciousness emerges precisely from what is scraped and exposed by subtracting control from the surface.
The meeting between the upper sienna and the lower yellow is not resolved through a geometric border or an aseptic division, but through an irregular seam, a sinuous relief that beats with the imperfection of the Earth's crust. It is on this tactile threshold that the two largest quadrangular blocks rest, assuming their position as witnesses to a shared border. Here, comunión (communion) takes place: the limit ceases to be a defensive trench or a hostile separation to transform into a contact membrane where both chromatic worlds and both densities of matter unify in a tense but silent embrace. At this subtle point of friction, the rigidity of the outline dissolves into a rough contact zone, demonstrating that true union does not demand absolute fusion, but rather intimate coexistence in the difference of the strata.
I observe those blocks resting on the border and often doubt the rigidity of my own constructive decisions. In my studio, each monolith and each plane fights for its own autonomy against the space that surrounds it, but painting constantly teaches me to depose the arrogance of the ego and absolute control. By allowing these blocks to settle on the organic seam of the canvas, I renounce the rigor of the straight line and open the work to the outside. I wish for "QUINQUE" to behave like an unprotected skin, an exposed body that accepts the elements of the changing light of the exhibition room and the gaze of others. By releasing control of the result and surrendering the canvas to direct dialogue with the environment, the painting ceases to belong to me to become a territory of comunión (communion) with the viewer, a space of vulnerability and silent encounter.
At the end of the visual journey through "QUINQUE", the notions of profundidad (depth), comunión (communion), and generosidad (generosity) interweave indissolubly in the material geography of the canvas. In contemplating the work, the viewer is stripped of the urgency to seek closed psychological explanations or anecdotal narratives; instead, they are invited to an immobile journey. The painting is finally revealed as a dry port, a subtractive cartography where the stillness of the blocks resting on the horizon and the subtle wound of the upper incisions halt the flow of everyday time. In this space of material silence, the painting does not seek to dazzle, but to accompany, offering an austere and clean refuge to inhabit the present with redoubled attention toward the most discreet mysteries of matter.
