LUX REMOTA — Context Study

In LUX REMOTA, light does not fulfil the reassuring task of indicating a destination. The white-cyan sphere, precise against the vast expanse of nocturnal blue, focuses the gaze without offering a route towards itself. Beneath it, the territory is organised into bands, changes of level, and blocks that suggest a possible geography, but not one that is immediately inhabitable. The painting thus evokes a recognisable experience: moving forward with enough signs not to be in darkness, yet not enough to know where one is going.

This uncertainty is built through visible relations, not through a closed allegory. Two stairways introduce the expectation of passage: one is interrupted by the lower edge; the other rises towards a band that neither connects with the light nor resolves the surrounding planes. The compact, worn red block does not function as shelter or destination either, but as a presence that cuts through the field’s continuity. Valch has worked with territory as memory, trace, and transformation, and his documented experience of extended journeys—including five Caminos de Santiago—helps situate this sensibility without reducing the work to biography. In his painting, as in those journeys, an outward route may be defined while the inward direction remains open. Orientation ceases to be a promise and becomes a sustained question.

Its presentation in a contemporary gallery confirms this condition without neutralising it. Seen from the right, the 120 × 80 cm canvas projects physically from the wall and shares the corridor’s focused, warm, uneven lighting; its blue surface, reds, and oranges stand out clearly among the other paintings on display. Yet the oblique framing and sequence of the corridor also introduce an external direction: the visitor knows where to walk while the work denies any internal equivalent. The gallery provides circulation, scale, and proximity; LUX REMOTA retains, within this real order, the interval between moving forward and arriving.
