LUX REMOTA — Context Study

In LUX REMOTA, night is not offered as a space to be crossed or overcome. The intense blue occupying the upper part of the canvas establishes a still, almost continuous expanse in which the small white-cyan sphere does not emerge as a dramatic spotlight: it remains at a distance. This restraint corresponds to a recurring sensibility in Maurizio Valch’s work, for whom the night sky can concentrate silence, melancholy, and attention. Within MARE SOMNIORUM, a series devoted to territories open between memory and imagination, darkness does not close off space: it gives it thickness.

The composition sustains this experience without becoming a narrative. Beneath the blue field, bands of pale pink, ochre, grey, green, and orange form a stratified ground whose horizon never quite fully orients us. The red block concentrates weight and opacity, while the two fine stairways propose routes that do not guarantee arrival: one disappears at the lower edge and the other rises towards a band that does not resolve the whole. The distance of the light, separation between planes, and traces of scraping make a condition of waiting tangible. The point is not to decipher symbols, but to remain before a territory that offers signs without demanding a conclusion.

Its presentation in a contemporary gallery reinforces this reading without neutralising it. Seen from above and at an angle, the 120 × 80 cm canvas remains at human scale on the white wall, among other works of more gestural colour, a wooden floor, and a viewing bench. The gallery spotlights reveal the worn matter of the red rectangle and variations in the lower bands, but do not turn the blue into a spectacle: its apparent smoothness still holds a zone of distance. In this real exhibition setting, the work does not dramatise darkness; it makes it inhabitable as a pause for the gaze, a condition from which to attend to what still resists resolution.
