LUX REMOTA — Context Study

In LUX REMOTA, clarity does not mean closeness or complete relief. Maurizio Valch places a white-cyan sphere within a dense blue field, like a light that can be seen yet cannot dissolve the night around it. The title names this condition: a remote light. Within MARE SOMNIORUM, a series that shapes non-literal landscapes from memory and imagination, the work sustains an altered image of Mediterranean luminosity while subjecting it to a distance that prevents any placid or decorative reading.

The tension is concentrated in the contrast between light planes and the resistance of matter. Bands of ochre, pale pink, and orange open a breathing space beneath the blue; yet their red edges, green and turquoise interruptions, and scraped areas prevent them from settling into a serene horizon. The large red rectangle, worn away to reveal blue beneath, has the weight of a presence that occupies and holds space. The fine stairways seem to propose passage, but one is cut short by the lower edge and the other does not resolve the separation between levels. The painting does not arrange an exit: it keeps together the promise of orientation and the friction of what remains inaccessible.

Its presentation in a contemporary gallery heightens this material condition. Seen from the left, the 120 × 80 cm canvas reveals its depth and casts a restrained shadow on the white wall; it does not appear as an illusory window, but as an object with its own weight. The concrete pillar, technical ceiling, and dark sculptures in the space extend, without illustrating it, the work’s internal opposition between suspended light and dense surfaces. Against this real architecture, LUX REMOTA makes it possible to understand the serenity of MARE SOMNIORUM as a serenity crossed by isolation, resistance, and a persistent friction between the imagined and the tangible.
