INTERVALLUM — Context Study

The visual tension between intense red and deep black establishes the primary chromatic relationship in INTERVALLUM. This artwork by Maurizio Valch, rendered in acrylic and oil on canvas, is structured into horizontal bands that explore the density of matter. Each strip displays a worked surface, where impasto and scraping reveal accumulated layers. In the upper section, three subtle red blocks emerge, while the black area features vertical lines suggestive of drips or incisions. A broad, luminous yellow band, marked by a dark circle and scattered small blocks, introduces a vibrant contrast before transitioning to a brownish-gray section with rough textures and hints of stepped forms. Finally, a green strip at the base anchors the composition. This material and chromatic stratification constructs a pictorial space that oscillates between the stillness of its horizons and the fracturing of its elements. The large-format vertical artwork invites contemplation of the surface as both territory and memory, offering a gateway to a threshold of perception.
