About this series

Maurizio Valch's STRATA series features contemporary abstract painting, showcasing artwork with stratified surfaces. Crafted with acrylic and oil on canvas, this series stands out for its dense chromatic fields and profound incisions, evoking an inner, archetypal territory.

Maurizio Valch's STRATA series delves into the concept of territory as an internal archive, a place where matter and memory are firmly anchored. Each piece, an original abstract painting, is built using acrylic and oil on canvas, applying layers of color, glazes, and impasto. This technique creates stratified surfaces and dense chromatic fields which, together with profound incisions, define a pictorial space without directly representing a landscape. The artist explores the sensation of what has been lived, sedimented, and hardened, inscribed on the surface like the memory of an archetypal territory.

Valch develops a structural and material abstract art, characterized by a palpable tension between stillness and transformation. The works are distinguished by their aesthetic of brutalist painting with texture, evident in the superimposition of layers and the concentration of matter. Intense color fields, often presented as structural abstract art in earth tones or indigo blues, contrast with vibrant accents that reinforce the visual structure. Horizontal divisions and finely incised lines, alongside compact blocks, suggest fissures or vestiges of a monumental presence, while the surfaces evoke skin, tanned leather, or organic matter.

The creative process, which includes glazes, impasto, scraping, and successive reductions, reveals a tangible construction that generates a sober and contemplative atmosphere. The blocks suggest internal structures, while the incisions function as fragmentary traces of memory, avoiding fixed meanings.
