MARE SOMNIORUM
Horizons of memory and dream, built with light and form
About this series
Maurizio Valch's MARE SOMNIORUM series presents original territorial abstract paintings. Created with acrylic and oil on canvas, these artworks explore an oneiric space of horizons and expansive planes, revealing an atmosphere of contemplation and serene strangeness.
Maurizio Valch's MARE SOMNIORUM series offers a pictorial investigation where evoked landscapes transform into an oneiric territory. These original territorial abstract paintings, executed with acrylic and oil on canvas, unfurl expansive planes, horizons, and isolated blocks that delineate spaces of light and silence. The artist develops a distinctive structural sensibility, characteristic of minimalist brutalist abstract painting, constructing austere compositions with large chromatic fields and textured surfaces. Valch's creative process combines layers of color, glazes, impasto, and scraping, resulting in paintings with stratified surfaces and incisions where the pictorial matter acquires an almost geological presence. Each artwork manifests as a place of distance and clarity, featuring an inherent tension between stillness and transformation. While the luminosity evokes a transformed Mediterranean, the series does not aim for literal geographical representation but instead opens a perceptual dimension where memory and imagination construct a space for contemplation and serene strangeness, keeping interpretations open regarding origin and belonging.
