Territory, Structure and the Emergence of Consciousness

Maurizio Valch develops a body of work that can be understood as architectural minimal abstract painting, exploring metaphysical territories through spatial structures and symbolic landscapes.

Maurizio Valch’s work is rooted in a central intuition: the individual does not simply inhabit the earth; he emerges from it.

This idea forms the conceptual foundation of his paintings. Rather than depicting landscapes as external scenery, the work investigates territory as a generative structure — a field where presence, orientation and consciousness begin to take form.

The paintings do not represent specific geographical locations. Instead, they construct metaphysical territories: spaces where geological structure, architectural order and human emergence intersect. Horizons organize the spatial field, monolithic forms appear as anchors of genesis, and incised stairways introduce the scale of the individual entering the territory. Segmented tectonic masses evoke formations that seem to precede human presence while already anticipating it.

A symbolic point of departure for this vision can be traced to the Mediterranean world, understood not as a regional identity but as a civilizational horizon where geology, architecture and metaphysical thought have long converged. Within this context, the cave of Nerja functions as an origin image — one of the earliest places where human presence left its mark inside the earth itself. The cave represents not merely an archaeological site but a foundational gesture: the moment when consciousness enters the territory and inscribes itself within it.

From this perspective, Valch’s paintings can be understood as studies in primordial architecture. The works do not depict buildings, yet they are deeply architectural in structure. Monoliths establish points of orientation. Stairways introduce movement and scale. Horizons stabilize the field. Geological divisions create layered territories where the viewer encounters a landscape that appears both ancient and newly emerging.

The visual language of the paintings draws from what may be described as symbolic geology. Stratification, compression and tectonic segmentation evoke deep geological time while simultaneously structuring a metaphysical space. These landscapes are not narratives; they are thresholds — territories where something essential seems about to appear.

Within this framework, painting becomes a form of architectural mapping of consciousness. The canvas functions as a territory where earth, structure and presence converge. Silence and spatial tension allow the viewer to encounter a moment that precedes culture yet already contains its possibility.

Valch’s work explores this threshold: the emergence of human presence from the structure of the earth itself.
